Hypnosis Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's

Q?

What is Hypnosis?

A.

Hypnosis is an altered state that everyone experiences naturally throughout various times during their day. Have you ever been so focused on something like a book, a good movie, or your drive home that you were unaware of the details of what was going on around you? How about being so caught up in your thoughts or a daydream that you didn't even notice someone talking to you? If you've ever experienced this you were in a hypnotic state, a trance. Hypnosis is a state characterized by focused attention, heightened suggestibility and extraordinary relaxation.

Q?

How does hypnosis work?

A.

While you are in hypnosis, communication between the conscious and subconscious levels of awareness is uninhibited by the critical part of our mind that has the function of kicking back any information that doesn't match what has already been programmed into our subconscious. This allows beneficial suggestions to be allowed and acted upon without having to go through the restrictive processes of the conscious mind.

Q?

Can I be hypnotized?

A.

While many people think that they cannot be hypnotized, research has shown that a large number of people are more hypnotizable than they believe. About 15-20% of the population is highly responsive to hypnosis while approximately ten percent of adults are difficult to hypnotize. Most people who have difficulty are those who have initial prejudices about hypnosis. Some have a more difficult time getting into the trance like state because they simply don't focus or take the time required. If you are interested in being hypnotized, it is important to remember to approach the experience with an open mind. Research has suggested that individuals who view hypnosis in a positive light tend to have a positive experience. Desire and expectation are key elements of responsiveness.

Q?

Can hypnosis help me?

A.

Even though hypnosis has proven useful and effective in a wide range of issues, it is no "cure-all" and it is no substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment. With that being said, it is an excellent adjunct to these treatments. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for anyone who wants to be more in control of all aspects of their life.

Q?

How many sessions will I need?

A.

Everyone and every issue or goal is different and so it's hard to say how many sessions someone will need. You will notice improvement with just one session but with most goals 3 to 6 sessions are recommended. Deeply rooted habits and limiting beliefs may take more sessions.

Q?

What is the difference between meditation and hypnosis?

A.

Hypnosis and meditation are both altered states with similar characteristics. Unlike meditation, in hypnosis there is an emotionalized desire to change or fulfill a behavior. Often the goal of meditation is to quiet the mind and stop thinking while in hypnosis selective thinking is established to communicate effectively with the subconscious mind to accomplish a specific goal.

Q?

What happens in a typical session?

A.

The first session is usually the longest at up to two hours in length. During this visit we will discuss your goal or what you would like to change. We will look at those things that are keeping you from your goal or from making the changes you'd like to make. Habits, obstacles, thoughts, limiting beliefs surrounding the goal as well as any history and contributing factors will be discussed. With this information, we will work together to produce positive suggestions and a game plan to help you successfully reach your goal. It's an easy process conducted in the relaxing, comfortable carefree environment of our office.

Q?

What should I look for in a hypnosis practitioner?

A.

Currently, there is no legislation requiring hypnosis training in Texas. There is no license issued by the state of Texas. In other words, anyone can call themselves a hypnotist and charge money. Make sure you are dealing with a qualified professional so it is in your best interest to ask about qualifications and certifications. There are a lot of people who have only taken a few weekend courses or worse, an online/home study course. Look for practitioners who have attended an on-site, state-licensed school that does not include any home study/unsupervised hours as part of their curriculum. Choose a practitioner that is a member in good standing of at least one professional certifying board and it is best if that board requires a minimum of 200 hours of training.

Q?

What are your qualifications?

A.

We each have received 500 hours of training at the Hypnotherapy Academy of America which has been a State Licensed Hypnotherapy School Since 1988. Training includes hypnosis, medical support hypnosis, natal regression, interlife regression, and past life regression. Certified by the International Board of Hypnotherapy (IBH) in Hypnosis and Medical Support Hypnosis. The IBH requires 400 hours of in-depth, supervised training, passing a practical and written exam and submission of evidence that the applicant has a solid grasp of medical support script writing. To maintain certification members must be stay current with annual training and a Code of Ethics must be followed.
